Helvetica is 50

The font face Helvetica is 50 years old today, make sure you sing it happy birthday when next you see it.

There's a film too - Helvetica is a feature-length independent film about typography, graphic design and global visual culture. I'm hoping the Scottish Documentary Institute can arrange a screening.

Today's post was bought to you using the font 'Helvetica'.

Ethics for Interface Designers

Stumbling across the Software Engineering Code of Ethics and Professional Practice made me think about a similar code for Interface Designers. Here's my interpretation:
  • ACCESSIBILITY - Interface designers shall ensure that their work is accessible to as many users, on as many platforms and devices as possible.
  • USABILITY - Interface designers shall ensure their work is usable and fit for purpose.
  • LEGIBILITY - Information shall be well communicated - be it typographic or conceptual.
  • CLIENTS v. USERS - Interface designers shall represent the needs of the user to the client.
  • STANDARDS - Interface designers shall adhere to standards where they exist and innovate where they don't.
  • VALUES - Interface designers shall aspire to delivering the work specified on time, to budget and to an high standard. See the Iron Triangle

95% of Web Design is...

Excellent article on Web Design and Typography from IA, a Japanese web design company.

It's one of the best articles on the subject I've read and it's already having a effect on the way I think about clients and their communication needs. Worth looking at Part 2 too.
